2014-10-28_Thinface Summer School
Thinface Summer School
Thinface is a Marie Curie Initial Training network with 8 partners from 6 countries. The project was granted on September 1st 2013 and deals with organic electronics. After the end of its first year we have now 11 out of 13 PhD candidates employed, two of them at SDU and a third one will follow.
In the past summer we had a wonderful time with 32 participants in a summer school that took place in Sønderborg. The students came from 8 European countries and spent a week of their summer with us. In total 14 scientists gave lectures or insights into their industries. The topics ranged from organic photovoltaics to organic electronics, device fabrication, device stability and interface issues in such systems.
Apart from attending the lectures the students had the chance to explore the town and meet in several locations in the evening with lecturers or on their own. Soon they developed new friendships and enjoyed themselves exploring the possibilities that Sønderborg offers. All enjoyed the summer school very much and we got comments like ‘ A wonderful summer school’ and ‘Sehr schöne Sommerschule´ and ‘Many thanks. This was a very good summer school.’ both from lecturers and participants.
The Marie Curie Program expects its participants to travel around a lot to other partners also from industry and to actively be involved in many activities as summer schools or open house or being ambassador in schools or public for the program and the topics they work on. 2014-10-21_ EuroNanoForum 2015 putting research and industry frontrunners in the spotlight in Latvia 10-12 of June 2015
EuroNanoForum 2015 takes place on 10-12th June 2015 in Riga, Latvia, under the auspices of the Latvian presidency of the European Union. It is organised by the University of Latvia and Spinverse in cooperation with the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Research and Innovation and has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme. The emphasis of the conference is in promoting a European manufacturing renaissance through applying nanotechnology and advanced materials.

It serves as an unparalleled platform for discussions amongst scientists, industrialists and policy makers, as well as an exceptional networking opportunity with the key decision makers. Following on from the previous successful events, EuroNanoForum 2015 will be organised in Riga during the Latvian Presidency of the European Council. The event’s programme builds on the agendas set by previous conferences and will give an outlook to European and global developments, trends and innovation demands in the nanotechnologies and advanced materials industries. The leitmotif of the conference is the support of a European manufacturing renaissance through industrial nanotechnology and advanced materials.
Plenaries, sessions and workshops will focus on advanced materials and new production technologies within industries such as the chemical, automotive, healthcare and energy. “Latvian Saiets” – within the frameworks of the Nanotech Europe 2015 exhibition - will display excellent Latvian research results and innovative companies. Furthermore, representatives of industry, SMEs, investors and policymakers, at regional, member state and transnational levels, will debate over framework topics ranging from education to entrepreneurship.

2014-09-23_University of Tartu opens East-Europe's most modern physics building with the science festival
"New building of the Institute of Physics, house with about 13 000 square meters, brings together under a common roof so far in separate buildings situated education and research," prof Jaak Kikas, the Director of the Institute of Physics, stressed the main objective of the new building.
In the new premises of the Institute of Physics four centers of excellence of Estonian science and 14 physics laboratories will operate. Those capabilities will be complemented by the extensive international cooperation, including the Finnish-Estonian synchrotron channel in Swedish national synchrotron radiation laboratory MAX-IV in Lund. "Materials research at the Institute of Physics is exceptionally at high level. The fact, that our research center was invated to participate in The Graphene Flagship project, also proves this" prof Kikas added.
For the students of physics, materials science and computer engineering, the conditions for the modern learning and testing have been created. In addition to broad lecture halls, the teaching will be given also in eight student labs, which are equipped with all the necessary equipment to carry out the practical work.
The new equipment and the novel spaces will lead the physics science in our institute to a completely new level, said prof Kikas. The most expensive new device is the transmission electron microscope (TEM), which costed two million euros. In new Physicum situates also the scanning electron microscope with focused ion beam (SEM-FIB), which enables the investigation of the internal structure of the materials in nano scale. In addition to just showing the 2D picture, this device enables the materials to be processed in nano scale (eg cut pieces out) and so to prepare the nanostructures for novel high-tech applications.
In the new building in next year, the physicists will have in they premises also ISO 5 and ISO 6 class clean rooms. "The dust is the biggest enemy of the physicists," explained prof Kikas, citing the need for dust-free environment to carry on the scientific experiments.
On the roof of the Physicum, the meteo-field is buildt, where meteorological observations (as started on the roof of the previous physics building) will continue. Also the control-antennas of the first Estonian student satellite ESTCube-1 are placed on the roof of this building.
The building has two large conference rooms that accommodate up to 300 people. Lecture halls are equipped with the most modern multi-media solutions that enable interoperability, ie, the same conference talks can be held and watched in parallel, in both big lecture halls of the building. "With innovative technology, the conferences conditions are contributing definitely into the image of Tartu as a science conference city," said Kikas, expressing the hope that the new lecture halls will bring to Tartu more high-level conferences and more foreign scientists: "I am confident that the Physicum will contribute to the international cooperation of the Institute of Physics and to the achievement of internationalization of the University of Tartu in general."
Institute of Physics, University of Tartu opened the new building on Monday, August 25.
The construction cost of Physics building were over 17 million euros, of which 13.5 million were covered by SA Archimedes via the European Regional Development Fund. The Physicum was built by Astlanda Ehitus OÜ and the architectural part designed by Kadarik Tüür Arhitektid OÜ (architects Ott Kadarik, Mihkel Tüür and Villem Tomiste, interior decorator Kadri Tamme).

2014-06-23_University of Tartu is new partner of the Graphene Flagship
The Graphene Flagship announced that today one of the largest-ever European research initiatives is doubling in size. 66 new partners are being invited to join the consortium following the results of a €9 million competitive call. University of Tartu Institute of Physics was chosen to be the only partner for the Flagship in Baltic States. Scientists from the University of Tartu are the first from Baltic States to participate in the project cost of one billion euros.
The incoming 66 partners will add new capabilities to the scientific and technological scope of the flagship. Now the partnership includes more than 140 organisations from 23 countries. It is fully set to take ‘wonder material’ graphene and related layered materials from academic laboratories to everyday use.
Vice-President of the European Commission Neelie Kroes, responsible for the Digital Agenda, welcomed the extended partnership: "Europe is leading the graphene revolution. This ‘wonder material’ has the potential dramatically to improve our lives: it stimulates new medical technologies, such as artificial retinas, and more sustainable transport with light and ultra-efficient batteries. The more we can unlock the potential of graphene, the better!”
Graphene was made and tested in Europe, leading to the 2010 Nobel Prize in Physics for Andre Geim and Konstantin Novoselov from the University of Manchester.
With the €1 billion Graphene Flagship, Europe will be able to turn cutting-edge scientific research into marketable products. This major initiative places Europe in the driving seat for the global race to develop graphene technologies.

Dr Frank Osterwald is responsible for research in the field of power semiconductor packaging and cooling at Danfoss Silicon Power – a manufacturer of power electronic modules. He makes use of packaging and interconnection materials which involve micro- and nano particles and applies micro technologies in the module factory. For him, micro- and nano-materials development is a key to future power electronic module concepts and solutions.

Detlef Friedrich began the talks with an excellent overview of the Fraunhofer Institute of Technology’s work on power electronic components and in particular the insulated-gate bipolar transistor (IGBT).

2014-03-21_New beginning for Technet_nano
On 20th of March 2014 the Technet_nano project partners met at the University of Southern Denmark (SDU) in Sønderborg for the official closing of the project. They presented latest findings on biotechnology, medicine and smart materials to show the various fields of application of nano- and microtechnology.
The cooperation of the involved research institutions in Denmark, Germany, Sweden, Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia and Poland was so effective and fruitful that the partners signed a memorandum of understanding stating their intent to continue the joint work.
