How it works: Prototyping of an Airbag Sensor

The initial situation of this story is a quite common one: A company wants another company to produce for them. In our case it is the fictional company A-FACTOR from Lithuania which wants to produce Silicon based membranes for MEMS.

How to achieve in a few steps the production of a working prototype – with a little help from the friends of the Technet_nano network?

The company A-FACTOR contacts Kaunas Technical University (KTU), because the CEO remembers a regional technology transfer meeting where he met the director of the Institute of Materials Science. So he asks him for processing semiconductors.


The director confirms that they can produce diamond-like-carbon super coatings. As he is not able to deliver Low Stress Nitride thin films which are important for MEMS the director contacts its Technet_nano partner, namely the University of Southern Denmark (SDU). They have experience in producing  thin films made of Low Stress Nitride.

SDU contacts its Technet_nano partner ACREO in Stockholm, because their semiconductor processing apparatus allows for fabricating strongly anisotropic structure. They communicate and work together.


CREO delivers the prototype to KTU.

TU delivers the prototype to its Lithuanian customer A-FACTOR.


During all these activities of the Technet_nano partners the CEO of A-FACTOR was informed but had no coordination tasks and neither needed specific knowledge about the competences of cleanrooms around the Baltic sea area. The Technet_nano partners involved were responsible for IPR management, project management and quality assurance.
